This is the second in a series about the heartbreaking losses from the NCAA Division I Championships in the consolation round to place – the bloodround.

When the NCAA expanded the placement at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships to eight in 1979, that removed the consolation quarterfinal round as the round needed to win to secure a top six placement and created what’s currently known by many as the bloodround. 

Going into the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships, Oklahoma State led all schools with 56 different occurrences of wrestlers losing the match to place. No one’s shedding a tear for the Cowboys, as the school is also the NCAA leader in all-time placewinners with 467 heading into 2021.
