Jason Bryant’s College Wrestling Wrap Sheet is a look at five topics from the world of college wrestling with highlights, things you know and things you don’t. Here’s the five for December 1, 2021.
Grand View extends win streaks
It’s been over eight years since Grand View University last tasted defeat on the college wrestling mats. It’s been even longer since the Vikings lost to an NAIA team. Coach Nick Mitchell’s squad started the dual meet portion of their schedule with a 54-0 win over Benedictine (Kan.) and a 35-9 win over Baker in Baldwin City, Kansas. Grand View’s college record win streak currently stands at 105 in a row. They’ve also won 129 NAIA duals in a row. The Vikings scored six falls in the opening shutout of Benedictine. Baker shut out Benedictine in the other dual in the tri-meet.
GPAC Duals in Sioux City
Morningside hosted a multi-team event within the Great Plains Athletic Conference with eight duals among conference schools. Third-ranked Doane topped the Red Raiders of Northwestern College, the one in Iowa, 35-13. The Tigers also beat Briar Cliff 28-10. Two-time NAIA champion Baterdene Boldmaa of Doane picked up a fall and a technical fall in both his bouts at 141 pounds.
Hastings also won a pair of duals, beating Jamestown, the one in North Dakota, 22-20 and Dakota Wesleyan 42-4.
Down South
In Division II, there were a number of duals featuring teams south of the Mason-Dixon Line and pretty much all of them are teams founded after 2005. King, the oldest team of the group about to be mentioned, beat Allen 37-9. Allen was the only four-year HBCU with wrestling until Division II Bluefield State added wrestling and Division I Morgan State announced it was brining the sport back. The team had struggled with numbers, but this year’s squad is more robust than ever. They’re crawling before they can walk.
Coker topped Mount Olive 27-15, Lander topped Emmanuel 43-6 and NAIA St. Andrews beat Emory & Henry 39-9. Both Allen and Emory & Henry are transitioning into Division II – Allen from the NAIA and E&H from Division III.
Splitting the PSAC
Clarion picked up a Mid-American Conference victory over PSAC rival Bloomsburg in Clarion on Wednesday. The top win of the night didn’t come from Clarion, though as Bloomsburg heavyweight Shane Noonan over NCAA qualifier Tyler Bagoly 8-5 at 285 pounds. Clarion had bonus victories from Joey Fischer at 125, Cam Pine at 165, John Worthing at 174 and Will Feldkamp at 197. In the Division II world of the PSAC, Kutztown defeated Seton Hill 29-15. Kutztown’s Brian Kennerly picked up a fall at 197 pounds to put the dual out of reach for the Golden Bears.
Women’s Action
Gannon opened up it’s season and celebrated senior night simultaneously in a 44-5 win over Elmira. The Griffins scored five falls in the dual … Lindenwood toppled Fontbonne 39-3. Falls were recorded by Jasmine Ward at 130, Kelly Escamilla at 143 and Alina Arana at 191. The fledgling programs at St. Andrews and Emory & Henry met up in Southwest Virginia with St. Andrews coming away with an 11-9 outcome that only saw two bouts actually contested. You’ve gotta crawl before you can walk.
